What is the Techno Painting Workshop?
The Techno Painting workshop is a creative method developed by Berlin artist Dina Shneider and launched in 2018. This is the original “Techno Painting” workshop that combines Techno Music with intuitive and therapeutic painting techniques and has hosted hundreds of participants in Berlin.
History of Techno Painting
It all started on the dance floor in 2016. Shneider experienced the intensity and bliss of the Berghain dance floor; she found it therapeutic for herself and had a strong desire to somehow share that experience with others. But how? The breakthrough came a few seconds later as she continued dancing – she understood that her rhythmic repetitive movements could be translated into color and strokes. Immediately she imagined herself painting using her dance movements – as though she had color coming out of her hands. Every track changed the movement, she didn’t need to “think” it, the change came intuitively, the body just knew what the next choreography was. Every track also changed in colors, low notes were dark, high notes were bright. Her slightly altered state of mind gave her a full vision of the future: she saw herself, on a stage in a club, painting and dancing in front of the crowd. The words appeared in her head “Tachno Painting”. That’s how it’s going to be called! And that’s what she’s going to do.

The first Techno Painting was done the next day. Shneider had a painting she had started a few weeks before. She put the canvas in front of her and found a set of the DJ that was playing in Berghain the day before. She had the luck to dance to Adam Buyer, one of the top Techno DJs of 2016. She told herself to recreate the same state she had on the dance floor, that flow, that immersion, that connection to the moment. No chemicals this time, just the movement and the music. And she started applying the colors according to the rhythm. Very quickly it became clear that the repetitive movement was putting her in a meditative state.
She finished painting two hours later. She loved the result and got many complements from those who’d seen the painting. She started painting daily. Coming back from work, exploring new DJ sets and developing the method. The vision was to perform live in a club.
When she lost her job, instead of looking for a new position, she immersed herself into Berlin club life. This resulted in many sleepless nights, many chemical adventures, and many new interesting acquaintances of DJs and Music producers. One year after she had invented Techno Painting she was performing live.
In Spring 2018 her friend came over to paint together. She brought a blank white canvas with her and realized she doesn’t know what to paint. She had some ideas before, she wanted to paint her impressions of the club they’ve been to together, but it seemed too difficult and time consuming. Shneider suggested she’ll show her the same technique she is using for her live performances. Something that allows her to paint quickly and finish a painting together with a 2-3 hour DJ set. Shneider instructed her, showing the layered technique and the creation of abstract patterns. After their session her friend declared that she had an incredible time, that it was therapeutic, that Shnieder is a good teacher and should teach this technique. Some weeks later another friend suggested she should try opening an Airbnb Experience and offer her unique painting technique. And so Techno Painting Workshop was born.
